Update 0.25

Hello everyone! Hope you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday season!

Finally managed to take a few weeks off during the holidays so just starting to ease back into development. This will likely be the last update to the web versions as I'm now turning my attention towards getting the Steam version running. The plan is still to launch with approximately 50 new items and depending on time constraints, the beginnings of a ranked mode with special challenge modifiers.

As I get back into the swing of things I'll also be posting some more documents and essays regarding the direction that the game will be going in early access. Obviously with 3 years or so of work ahead, I'm expecting the game to evolve and grow quite significantly so I'd like to do at least a little bit of up planning to make sure everything stays on track.

  • All characters +1 starting MP.
    • This gives a very slight edge to casters at the start but more importantly means that all characters can immediately make use of a tier-1 spell found on the first Tome of Knowledge
  • Flaming Battle Sphere Range: 4 => 5
  • Flaming Battle Sphere Damage +1
  • Burst of Flame has had its range (to the torch) decreased
  • Burst of Flame has had the range of its bursting bolt decreased
    • Flaming Battle Sphere likely needs a few more buffs imo. Main thing I'm trying to do is move some of the Fire Mages power out of Burst-of-Flame which is crazy powerful but inconsistent into Flaming-Battle-Sphere which as a Tier-3 spell should be a lot better then in currently is. Need to do a bit more testing myself here.
    • Mostly I just want to determine if it needs a bit more HP just to survive (but not become tanky), or if it should just keep getting its damage boosted to play into the Fire Mages glass cannon arch-type.
  • Confusion +1 Duration
  • Completely removed teleport traps as I don't think they are really doing anything interesting at this point.
  • Slightly increased the chance for pit-traps (hidden ones) to spawn on levels
  • Reverted the changes to the number of waves for spawners (less), while increasing their HP slightly.

Just a small bug report/level design error? The Spirit Caves have two spots near the beginning where what looks like normal ground is not able to be passed through and referred to as a tree when moused over. In the image they are the two spaces circled in red. There is also a minor inconsistency where the large trees on other levels of the Ice Caves are two spaces wide and one space tall (your sprite can partially go behind the tree), whereas in The Spirit Cave they are two space wide and two space tall obstacles (the whole tree sprite is impassable).

huh, weird. Thanks for letting me know!

Burst of Flame is inconsistent because it relies on environmental fire sources (and because there are never torches on the south wall of a room, given the 3d texture of the map).

But when you had the flaming tempest epic talent (I don't remember what it was actually called) this allowed  producing your own enduring flaming effects, and then bursting off of them.

I'd love to see this kind of mechanic return, instead of the "summon ranged fire ally".  Maybe if flaming sphere made some flaming clouds, perhaps a bolt line of them or range targeted clouds (smite targeted?), instead of shooting projectiles this would bring the two ideas together.

Or, tier three is Summon Flame Vortex, with level two increasing the number of fire melee allies summoned (from 1 to 2?  2 to 3?), and you can Burst of Flame off of them.  Probably, they would be need to be used up by this, to prevent *too much* synergy.

Great ideas that will be worth exploring! I'd love to see the Fire Mages talents synergizing like this. Fire Orb is also pretty lame in its current incarnation so could definitely benefit from some reworking.

Another similar path I'm eager to explore is to have the things like vines, webs, etc. create burning clouds instead of instantly spreading. This would help differentiate from the shock spread mechanic, allow the player to create additional flame sources and just look really really cool as the fire mage sets whole swaths of the level on fire.

You know, I was thinking of the flame vortexes from Stone Soup, where they leave a a short trail of flaming clouds.  So maybe something like this, with a random moving front end, instead of an ally version of the monster? Something that isn't a creature, doesn't have an attack or HP, something that will swirl around the character, at some distance with some randomness?

completely agree, a consumable flame-source summon would work much better for FE than the flaming sphere

Ok, fair.

Oh yes! That will all be turned back on in their current broken state (I'll fix the talents that were not working as well). I'm pretty sure it was just a 1-2 line toggle that has them disabled in the web release.

I'm not planning to tackle races right off the bat (want to get some momentum going on adding new content finally), but I will be doing a first pass on races some time in the nearish future.

*edit* err I might have misread your comment, I'll be turning them back on for the Early Access version. I don't want to include stuff in the web release that is obviously broken. For Early Access I'm more comfortable including them in that state since its well... Early Access.

Although, If I've underestimated the amount of time this would take, I realize that steam is the priority.

Could you please bring back the attribute based races (Ogre, Gnome, fairy a bit broken and all) just for the daily challenges (kind of like they were before the "bug fix" in the race removal update)? I think it would make the daily challenges a bit more, well, challenging. I loved the challenge of ogre mages and gnomish barbarians were just hilarious. Of course we might also see the flip side of this with things like fairy ranger, but that's part of the fun. By shoving a random race and class together it forces the player to come up with new and innovative strategies.  This would motivate me at least  try out the newest challenge  each day.  Just one more web update, please?
